ESTJ - The Guardian

Extroverted Thinking with Introverted Sensing

Logical, Decisive, Systematic, Objective, Efficient, Direct, Practical, Impersonal, Responsible, Structured, Conscientious

General:

ESTJs are doers who roll up their sleeves, dig in, and proceed directly to get job done.  They use logic an analysis as guiding principles for their lives. They are quick to decide and set a plan of action. They marshal resources in an organized way and follow through.  They like closure. They monitor events continually and make sure that commitments, both their own and those of others, are honored and the job gets done. They are at their best in situations that have some structure to them and involve activity, not contemplation, and in which an end product is desired.

Living:

ESTJ children want life to be logical, practical, organized and fair. They are often responsible, reliable, and obedient if the rules make sense. They may be upset by a change in rules or routine. ESTJ teenagers value traditional things to do, such as team sports, band, and class offices. With their ability to organize and get things going, they often assume leadership roles. ESTJS begin early to assume responsibility for themselves and often have part-time jobs. These jobs usually are for specific purposes, such as saving money for college or buying cars and clothes.  As young adults, ESTJs focus on their goals, both personal and professional, and make these goals become reality. ESTJs makes decisions based on realistic criteria and unlikely to chance something uncertain or risky.   They often gain respect of others because of their dependability, follow-through, and task completion. They are often pillars of the family, community, church, or business world.

Learning:

ESTJs learn best in structured situations in which the objectives are clearly established. They like schedules or agendas so they can plan ahead. Their idea of a good teacher is one who is consistent, fair, and applications oriented. They like learning activities such as field trips and experiments. Because of their realistic bent, they may get so caught up in activities that they may not see what concept the activity represents. They can get stuck if they concentrate only on facts without putting together into a coherent whole.

Working:

When an organization wants a job done-on time, on schedule, with strict specifications, ESTJs can deliver.  They are direct and decisive, especially when they see a flaw. They are especially good at organizing the steps and the resources needed to get the job done. ESTJs prefer a work environment that is task-oriented, structured, organized, and filled with other hard-working people.  They want stability, predictability, and efficiency. They normally stay long in the company and the transition to retirement may be difficult.  They enjoy occupations such as government workers, insurance agents, supervisor, trade and technical teacher, sales rep etc that allow them to see tasks accomplished.

Leading:

ESTJ leadership style is the one on which many American business are based. Whenever situations require a leader, ESTJs take charge quickly and give advice directly. ESTJs’ opinions of what ought to be done are based on their past experiences. They are more task than relationship oriented and can appear to others as tough, driven, or heartless. While they invite input from others, they expect them to adhere to the ESTJ’s final decision.

Leisure:

ESTJs put work before pleasure and generally keep these activities separate. Leisure occurs only after work is completed and must be earned or oriented toward some goal, such as enhancing good family relationships or maintaining health. They do not spontaneously go for walks; the walks must have purpose. ESTJs like activity leisure pursuits or observing action events such as sports. ESTJ men often enjoy traditional male pursuits such as hunting, fishing, camping and golf. Mothers usually engage in activities that their children enjoy.

Loving:

For ESTJs, love means stability and steadfastness. They typically enjoy actives pursuits, such as going to parties and sporting events. ESTJs give and expect security and loyalty in relationships. When commitments are broken, ESTJs become upset because they hold others to the same standard of steadfastness as to themselves. They expect logically that relationships will have ups and downs, they may ignore helping their partner or examining their relationship during those down times. In some cases, this inaction can be detrimental to their relationship.
